This work is a thorough examination of the enormous differences between the attitudes toward Jews of the First Republic, the Third Reich and the German Democratic Republic. This is a study of the Jewish community of Leipzig, Germany over the course of the 20th century. The history of German Jews is a richly covered topic, but there have been few local studies of Jewish communities covering such a breadth of time. It becomes clear from such a perspective that German Jews were indeed at the mercy of the state and its intentions, and that those intentions varied wildly. But at the same time, the book finds that German Jews were not entirely and always at the mercy of the state, and focuses on the choices and agency that were available to Jews in all of these regimes, to define themselves as Jews and as Germans. The interplay between Jewish Leipzigers, their institutions and their governments, offers a case study in the construction of identity, as well as the brutal halt that can be put to such work by politics.
