In order to make money off you site, you need traffic. Traffic is critical. The most accepted way to drive traffic to your website is to get the big Search Engines to list your site on the 1st page of a search that is relevant to your site. In other words, you need the Search Engines to increse you page ranking.
The top five search engines control over 99% of searches. The top five search engines as of July 2010, according to Hitwise.com are Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask and AOL Search.
So how do we do convince these big boys to list your site on the first page? Well, that is where Search Engine Optimisation comes in. There are many ideas on how to optimize your site so that the search engines will post it way up there on the first page, and we will explore several of these ideas over the course of the next few articles.
For now, let’s look at increasing backlinks to your site.
What are backlinks? Well a backlink is an incoming link to your website. So a link to your site that is posted on another website is called a backlink. The more backlinks to your page, the more popular the search engines think it is, and the higher they rank it. So the more backlinks you have the more likely you are to get on the 1st page of the search results. And voila, your search engine ranking has increased!
