“In essence, if we want to direct our lives, we must take control of our consistent actions. It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives, but what we do consistently.” ~ Anthony Robbins.

Another critical facet in goal achievement is consistency. Persistence implies consistency. But it is so important that it is worth its own article. Consistency is perhaps one of the most boring principles there is. However it is one of the most successful. Whether you enjoy it or not, if you stick to your diet and your exercise plan every single day for 2 months, you will lose the weight and become healthy. It may not be exciting but it will be effective without a doubt.

What is consistency?

Consistency is doing what you need to do every day to get where you want to be. Achieving Your Goals Part II – Form a Plan talks about formulating your goal plan so that you are clear on all the steps that you need to take to be successful. Each step is broken down into smaller steps. So if you want to lose weight you may decide that you have to do 2.5 hours of exercise a week – and you break this down to doing 30 mins of exercise each weekday. You may have specific days to do cardio and specific days to do weights. So on each day, you have something to do that is a step towards achieving your goal. Do it.

How to do it when you don’t feel like doing it

That seems really simple and it is. Where we find the challenge is often in our feelings. We sometimes don’t ‘feel’  like doing what we are supposed to do. Well, here is what I have learnt – it does not matter how I feel at that moment – once I do it anyway, I will still succeed. So you might not feel like exercising. All the while you are dragging on your gym clothes and tying your laces, you might be grumbling. All the while you are stretching, and jumping and twisting and turning, you might be feeling lousy. But you will still be burning the calories – your body will still be getting healthier even as you grumble. So just do it, no matter how you feel.

Imagine your final feelings

And one thing is for certain, once you finish you will feel very proud of yourself. If you fail to do what you need to that day, you will feel disappointed in yourself, dejected and it will be the first step towards giving up your goal altogether and feeling like a failure. So compare those eventual feelings of failure with your minor feelings of disgruntlement today. And just be sure to do what you need to do today to achieve your goal.

If you do what you need to do when you need to do it, you will achieve your goal – whether you like it or not :)

“Part of courage is simple consistency.” ~ Peggy Noonan.
