Getting where you want to be

How many goals have you set over the years - and not achieved? Can you remember your goals from 5 years ago, or even 3 or even your new year’s resolution from January this year?

Did you want to lose a few pounds but now weigh even more? Did you want to open your own business but still find yourself an 8-5 slave working for someone else? Did you want to change your diet to eat healthier but still find yourself eating burgers and fries daily? Did you want to organize your closet/office/kitchen/study, but find it in an even more disorganized mess as the year end approaches?

Why you haven’t achieve your goals

What are the reasons you did not follow through with those goals? That is a question that you ought to spend some time meditating on. The answer will firmly set you on a path to achieving your new goals. Once you know why you stopped trying to achieve your goals (and that’s the only real reason those goals are left unachieved) you can take steps to plan for and counteract it in the future.

Persistence and success

One of the primary reasons that goals remain unachieved is a lack of persistence. We are excited and fired up and highly motivated when we make the resolution to achieve our new goal. We are determined to succeed in that moment. However some obstacle – large or small – presents itself and at some point we allow that obstacle to deter us from continuing to do what it takes to achieve our goal. Achieving Your Goals Part II - Form a Plan discusses in detail how to plan for obstacles and pitfalls when creating your goal plan. Planning how to handle obstacles before they occur is a powerful method to successfully overcoming obstacles. But it will not prevent the obstacles from occurring.

In this article we are discussing the persistence required to continue steadfastly regardless of obstacles and opposition. Always bear in mind that achieving your goal is not straightforward – otherwise you would have achieved it long ago. It is challenging for you but you must keep reminding yourself that as long as you keep trying, as long as you keep putting effort into doing what you need to do to achieve your goal, you will succeed.

How to be Persistent

Persistence is by no means easy, but it is simple. Everytime you feel like giving up, you must tell yourself to keep going. You must keep the picture of final achievement of your goal in your mind. Achieving Your Goals Part V - Change Your Environment explains what you can do to ensure that your keep your end-goal, your final result always in mind. When you feel like it is too hard, or the journey is to long remind yourself of why you doing this, of what you will achieve at the end and of how proud you will feel. And do this every time you feel discouraged.

You must be persistent about being persistent :)

Control your thoughts. Keep reminding yourself that as long as you keep trying you will succeed. Remind yourself that if you give up then failure is certain but as long as you keep trying, you have a chance to succeed. By definition once you keep trying over and over and never let anything, no matter how discouraging, deter you from keeping on trying, then you will succeed. It is a certainty. Your largest challenge is you - your largest challenge is deciding everyday to be determined to succeed. Feed yourself these positive thoughts daily. Focus on your goal daily, as often as possible. With practice it will become easier and soon you will know for a fact that success is assured.

The next article will discuss the importance of consistency which is closely related to persistence.

“Never, never, never, never give up.” ~ Winston Churchill.
