“History will never accept difficulties as an excuse” – John Fitzgerald Kennedy

I hear all the time people talking about how life is unfair or that something they are trying to do is “too hard”. I have rarely been prey to the first thought of life being unfair. But I used to regularly believe that everything was too hard. Somehow, somewhere I developed the notion that things should be easy, and more importantly, that something is wrong with things being hard.

Firstly, nowhere is it written that life is supposed to be fair. So let’s clear the air on that one right up front. Each person is dealt a different set of cards (forgive the card analogies – I am quite fond of card games :) ). Some people are born rich, others poor, some healthy, some ill. Some people have only minor tragedies befall them, others constantly have major tragedies befall them one after the other. Different cards for different people. We each are given different circumstances because we are each different people. Don’t look to what others have or do not have with jealousy or envy.

Focus on YOUR life

Focus on yourself and your life. Focus on what you have and what you can do to get what you do not have. Work out a plan to achieve in life the things you want to achieve, whatever they may be. Waste not time bemoaning your losses or your perceived deprivations. Nothing is achieved by that. Except that you are wasting valuable time that you could be using to bring into your life those things that you want to have.

Life is not fair

Life is not meant to be fair. Accept that right now and move on. Every person is not meant to start at the same point nor to get the same breaks. You are given what you need to become the best you. Some divine power, or some karmic force has determined what you need and you are granted those things – and those things may include hardships and struggles. In fact, if you can find a single person that has not experienced hardship, bring that person to me – I’d like to have a chat with him or her.

Life is not easy

And that brings us to the other point. Life is not meant to be easy either. Because something is hard does not mean you ought to give up. You must rise to the challenge. Challenges are placed in your path to foster your growth. When you find something hard, or as I prefer to say, challenging, gird your loins and prepare to work harder. Recognise the challenge and determine to rise to the occasion. Make an active choice to work as hard as it takes to succeed.

Stop wasting your time bemoaning how difficult it is. Start using that same energy to fight even harder. It is just a choice that you need to make in your mind. It is your decision to groan and complain and set about weeping and wailing “Oh woe is me, life is so hard” or to proclaim instead “Yes, this is challenging but I am worthy of the challenge. I will work harder and I will succeed.” Which do you choose?

Make a different choice today

Just because you have always complained does not mean that you cannot try something different. I was not always the person I am today. I complained and waited always for somebody else to change things for me. I raved against God for the particular set of circumstances he gave me. I blamed everyone else.

What a lot of wasted time, thought and breath. Perhaps it was someone else’s fault – but what good did it do me to complain about that? It did not get me where I wanted to be. Only positive mindset and positive action can get me there.

So choose to change. Choose to fight. Choose to win. Choose to rise to your challenges. Choose to be persistent. Choose to keep getting up no matter how many times you fall down. Choose to change your focus and acknowledge that this life is given to you to help you become the best you can be. Choose to stop grumbling. Choose to be grateful for your challenges.

How different can your day be if instead of complaining that life is unfair or that a thing is hard to do, you decide instead to acknowledge that this is just a challenge that can help you grow?
